Presentations at the past two Construct3D conferences have introduced a notion of CNC Craft, influenced by the role of representation in the design and fabrication process, aiming to develop a more agile and adaptive workflow between digital models and contemporary manufacturing techniques. A particularly powerful such technique is waterjet cutting, which is capable of working with a wide variety of materials, but presents different challenges as compared to other digital fabrication technologies. In particular, the CNC craft approach for 5-axis waterjet machining can explore the potential of a machine that has not been investigated to the same extent as CNC milling in educational and/or research settings. Thus, CNC craft, a technique used in education, provides a route to challenge the limits of what 5-axis waterjet machining can achieve.
